I was supposed to glaze pots this week. I have to do it by installments because of my day job, but especially because of the crappy weather we've been having. Spray-glazing in this weather is not totally bad, I can spray several layers and multiple colors, and bring about unexpected effects that can hardly be replicated. And on top of that, as I wait for the biscuit to dry I get practise time at the torch. So this is what came out of my anealing kiln this week. Overlapping dots resembling a lotus flower, or tiny Ming pots as in the examples below.

I was so enthused by the results that even dared use them to make sterling-silver earrings that involved some soldering (a new skill to be learnt).

These ones have a Chinese air about them, the blue and white with a hint of pink remind me of ancient porcelain seen in museums.

While making these I found one more way of using spirals: the beads incorporate swirls that look like tiny waves. The spacer beads are recycled bottle glass: eco-beads!!!!

And now I would be very grateful if it stopped raining, this potter needs to go back to work.

Coils and spirals are all around us and I am totally obsessed by them. I never miss a chance to affix a good spiral on my pots, at their bottom when they are thrown on the wheel, or on the decoration, be it slip-trailed, stamped or carved.

Good news number three is that I found unexpected ways of putting spirals on jewels, especially on their functional parts, earpieces, hooks and the like. A spiral is not just any curve, it suggests movement and depth, and it hints to the centrifugal force that's a potter's best friend.

I wonder whether all potters are obsessed by spirals. Is this obsession a collateral effect of working on the wheel or is it the other way round? Maybe one cannot become a potter unless he/she's obsessed by spirals!!
