La terza: le spirali - Third good news: spirals

Il mondo è pieno di spirali. La buona notizia è che dopo aver profuso spirali sul fondo degli oggetti foggiati a tornio, sulla decorazione a barbottina, grafitta e a stampo, ho scoperto nuovi modi per incorporarle nella bigiotteria, e in particolare nelle parti funzionali dei monili, ganci, fermagli e monachelle!!

Credo che quella delle spirali sia una ossessione molto diffusa. Che cos'ha questo grafismo per affascinare artisti, artigiani e comuni mortali?  No è solo una curva, suggerisce profondità, movimento, e la forza centrifuga che sta alla base del lavoro del torniante. Mi domando se tutti i tornianti siano affascinati dalla spirale, se la fascinazione per la spirale sia un presupposto imprescindibile per dialogare con il tornio.

 

Coils and spirals are all around us and I am totally obsessed by them. I never miss a chance to affix a good spiral on my pots, at their bottom when they are thrown on the wheel, or on the decoration, be it slip-trailed, stamped or carved.

Good news number three is that I found unexpected ways of putting spirals on jewels, especially on their functional parts, earpieces, hooks and the like. A spiral is not just any curve, it suggests movement and depth, and it hints to the centrifugal force that's a potter's best friend.

I wonder whether all potters are obsessed by spirals. Is this obsession a collateral effect of working on the wheel or is it the other way round? Maybe one cannot become a potter unless he/she's obsessed by spirals!!
