3 buone nuove - parte prima / 3 good news - part one

Ieri è stata una giornata di piccole grandi scoperte. Nella fattispecie, giocando con i miei materiali ho scoperto tre novità che mi hanno rallegrato l'intera settimana. Le riferisco a rate perché, per quanto piccole, ognuna merita un post a sè stante, non fosse che per le foto.
Scoperta Numero Uno
Posso usare vetro e ceramica insieme nei bijoux!!!!
Si, lo so, sono troppo schematica e spesso le cose più ovvie mi sfuggono: o fai ceramica o fai vetro, e il fatto che io faccia entrambe le cose è solo un'anomalia casuale.
Fino a ieri infatti le perle di vetro e di ceramica, almeno come le faccio io, per il momento a bassa temperatura, mi sembravano totalmente inavvicinabili. Pur rendendomi conto di avere a che fare con materiali affini, anzi parenti prossimi, la lucentezza del vetro e la ruvidezza della terra mi sembravano inaccostabili. Eppure lo smalto per ceramica in realtà non è altro che vetro a cui si aggiungono additivi fondenti e refrattari, i primi per abbassarne la temperatura di fusione e i secondi per renderlo compatibile con il coefficiente di espansione dell'argilla.

Poi ho avuto questa stupidissima illuminazione, perché non mescolare le carte?, e ho messo insieme pasta egiziana turchese di rame con il vetro opaco avorio con tocchi di turchese e filo di rame. I risultati sono alla vista, e non sono male, speriamo.

Yesterday I stumbled upon three major - for me - findings that made me cheerful for the rest of the week. I'm going to deal with one of them at a time, so here goes good news number one.
Clay and ceramic beads can be combined in the same piece of jewelery.
Sometimes the most obvious things fail me. I didn't know I could combine glass and ceramic beads in my jewelery, isn't it lame? I actually felt a little guilty as a potter for playing with glass. I thought it made me less serious as a potter if I enjoyed experimenting with glass, it felt like betraying my official "partner". And yet glass and clay are so akin in terms of composition! Ceramic glaze is nothing but glass and additives: flux that lowers the melting temperature of glass and alumina that makes it compatible with clay. But in my mind clay and glass were locked in different compatments, they wouldn't mix. Glass was shiny and perfect and my low-temperature clay beads were way too rough to blend in. But at some point then the light went on and I put it all together: copper Egyptian paste and opaque ivory glass with turquoise and copper wire details, not bad I hope.
